Mail Call Ladies!

Here it is……The Reunion Announcement. Reunion number 11. It’s once again time to grab family and friends and get ready to have a GREAT time seeing old friends and making new ones.

I want to point out that this is basically the “Vietnam Era” reunion.” But any 2/9er’s invited to attend. We are all a “Band of Brothers!”

In this letter you will find an “ Updated” addition to the Network Roster. These are the names of the men who have signed on since the last newsletter was mailed out in January. That is one reason why this letter has been mailed out to all of the men in the Network from WW II to Korea through the Post Vietnam Era. We have picked up members from all these periods. So if you men who served in the times other than Vietnam were wondering why you are receiving this, that is the reason.

There again will be a hospitality room open for all three days. So bring whatever photographs and memorabilia you have. There will be ample display areas.

If you wish to indulge in a drink or two, there is a bar located in the restaurant at the hotel. The Network will provide the brewskies, you will be allotted 2 warm cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon, or two warm cokes. (just a joke) Anything harder than that you will want to bring. Soft drinks and coffee will be provided as well. This will be in the conference room. There is no registration fee so feel free to bring any pogey bait you desire.

IMPORTANT BANQUET ANNOUNCEMENT!

This year is really kind of strange as far as getting a banquet set up. The facility that we have used for the past 2 years does not “officially” or “normally” hold banquets on the days we need them. That is Sunday or Monday. But they will do so for a “guaranteed“ amount of money. That dollar amount far exceeds the amount of money we have expended over the past years. Also there “gratuity” is bumped up from 15% to 20%. There has been some legwork done to find another facility but we’re looking at $35 to $40 chicken dinners and again with a guaranteed amount of dollars. So what I am planning on doing this reunion is to on the evening of the 10th just cater in a bunch of food to the conference room. Maybe a huge Pizza Party or something like that. And there are a number of restaurants in the area to eat at because I know that you will find old and/or make new friends at the reunion and just hanging out will be sufficient. So basically this years reunion will really be a laid back affair with a central gathering area for all of us.

So if you are coming this year I would like to ask you to make a small , maybe $5 to $10 per person donation to help with the catering expenses. (Please indicate “Catering”)

A CHANGE TO THE 2/9 NETWORK

As you all know I started this Network back in 1984 with a handful of names and a desire to find four men that I served with in Vietnam. That was 19 years ago. With the introduction of the 2/9 Web Site this Network has grown immensely. The Web Site has had over 70,000 “hits”. The Network has men signing in from all eras. It is true when I say that men sign in almost on a daily basis.

There are now a large number of Marines that are “Post” Vietnam Era 2/9er’s. There are a number of Marines that are “Pre” Vietnam Era. What I have decided to do is go back to what my original plan was and that is to deal with “Vietnam Era” Marines.

I will still keep a database of ALL Marines that were with 2/9. The web site will reflect this also. All 2/9er’s will be on the Website.

If someone from the Post or Pre Vietnam Era wish to have a reunion or send newsletters or whatever to 2/9ers from their time period then all they will need to do is get in touch with me and I will provide them with the data they need to do so. Over the years I have informed everyone that I would include any announcements of Reunions or whatever in the Battalion Runner. But that has not occurred for this year. So as I stated I will be dealing with the time frame of 1960-1975.

The Reunion information will be posted on the website and ANY 2/9er is welcome to attend.

Help For a Former Corpsman

My name is Pat Dougherty and as most of us know Doc Morrison has died. His family is trying to get him buried at sea. Myself and my brother are trying to get this accomplished. My brothers father-in-law is with the State Department and he has found an Admiral to help with things and we think it is almost a done deal but what we would like is some letters from 2/9ers. Letters from officers of 2/9 as well will help a lot. Please see what you can do and they can send the letters to my brother at dmdough@aol.com or to me at Pdough1@cox.net . Doc spent 30 years in the Navy and a lot of that time was with Marines. Any kind of letter asking that his remains be buried at sea will help. Thanks for anything you can do.

Begging Once Again!

The last newsletter ran almost $2,300.00 to copy, print and mail out. As stated above the Network keeps going on contributions from You its members. This “Reunion Announcement” will be a little bit cheaper due to the fact that the entire roster is not included. You will find a roster of the men that have “joined” since the last newsletter hit your mailbox. There will be almost 1500 letters mailed out this time. So every contribution helps. It is a good thing that you do. There are men that find the Network and e-mail me with words such as “I have finally talked to my buddies that I haven’t seen or heard from in over 30 years.”

See you in November!

I just want to say that I hope to see a great group once again in November. Each year I expect the reunion to be smaller. Each year it grows. Last year 184 at the banquet. So again, there are 65 rooms blocked this year. After those rooms are taken the regular hotel rate kicks in. So if you’re planning on coming don’t wait until the last moment to make your reservation.

So once again

Semper Fi and See You at the Iwo Jima...
