Reunion 2001

Mail Call Ladies!

Here it is……The Reunion Announcement. Reunion number 9. It's once again time to grab family and friends and get ready to have a GREAT time seeing old friends and making new ones.

I want to point out that this is basically the "Vietnam Era" reunion. But any 2/9er's invited to attend. We are all a "Band of Brothers!"

In this letter you will find an "Updated" addition to the Network Roster. These are the names of the men who have signed on since the last newsletter was mailed out in January. That is one reason why this letter has been mailed out to all of the men in the Network from WW II to Korea through the Post Vietnam Era. We have picked up members from all these periods. So if you men who served in the times other than Vietnam were wondering why you are receiving this, that is the reason.

I wish I had basically more news to report other than the Vietnam era but no one has sent me any information regarding any reunions or other stuff pertaining to their times. So I again reiterate that if you have any pertinent information you would like to have passed along to get that to me.

There again will be a hospitality room open for all three days. So bring whatever photographs and memorabilia you have. There will be ample display areas.

If you wish to indulge in a drink or two, there is a bar located in the restaurant at the hotel. The Network will provide the brewskies, you will be allotted 2 warm cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon, or two warm cokes. (just a joke) Anything harder than that you will want to bring. Soft drinks and coffee will be provided as well. This will be in the conference room. There is no registration fee so feel free to bring any pogey bait you desire.

IMPORTANT!

I will NOT be taking banquet orders at the reunion this year. This year there are dates that have to be met with the restaurant. The dinner will be held at the Ft. Myers "O" Club. If you haven't made your dinner reservations by the time of the reunion please don't beg me to get into the banquet. If you are planning on attending the Banquet you MUST have your reservations mailed to me no later than OCTOBER 25, 2001. I repeat, I will not be taking Banquet orders at the reunion.
I made this same announcement last year and I still had brothers asking to get reservations made. And that problem is that it makes it my problem. As I said there are certain time frames that have to be made with the restaurant.

Since the last newsletter, 119 men have been added to the roster and names still keep coming in. There should be (hopefully) some new faces at this years reunion along with the faces from last year. Again, call someone you know and tell em' to come on down. This is not a black tie event. It is very laid back.

A reminder for you men that served in WW II.

COMBAT ACTION RIBBON FOR WW II
In October, H.R. 52, sponsored by Rep. Michael R. McNulty, (D-NY) included a C.A.R. provision (Sec 564). The bill authorizes the Secretary of the Navy to award the Combat Action Ribbon to a member of the Navy or Marine Corps for participation in ground or surface combat during any time after December 6, 1941 and before March 1, 1961.
To receive your Combat Action Ribbon just fill out the SF-180 request pertaining to Military Records and forward it and a copy of your DD #214 or discharge to: Bureau of Naval Personnel, Liaison Office, Room 5409, 9700 Page Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63162-5100. You will probably need to contact them for the SF-180 Request Form.
And yes, the Marine Corps is a part of the Departmnet of the Navy.
It's the "MENS" Department!

A Note from Steve Stickly about the History Channel

The History Channel is interested in interviewing veterans of the Vietnam War for an up coming program. Please contact me at (212) 754-9318 ext. 203, or feel free to email me at chrismaurer@aetn.com.
We are interested in the real people and the real history behind the Vietnam War. There is a good chance your stories could be an addition to the program. The taping will be from April 20th through the summer in New York City.
For details call or write. Please get back to us as soon as possible.

Photographs

If any of you have any photos you would like displayed on the web site you can mail them to me and I will scan them and put them on board. Pictures could be such as "Who is this guy?" Or anything you feel is something folks would be interested in. Now don't go crazy and send me a ton of photos. There are space constraints. Maybe just a couple of photos. If you want to e-mail me the pictures
copy and save them as a JPEG file and attach them to a e-mail and send to graymarine@aol.com. Remember that's JPEG. Also put what title you would like to be placed with the snapshot. I am thinking of changing servers so if my -email gets returned go to the web site and mail to the "Battalion Scribe".

The Untimely Passing of one of our own.

In the last "Battalion Runner" I announced that Marnette Clemons was very sick. It is with great sadness that I report that Marnette passed just on December 18th. Marnette will be missed by many. She was of great service to the Network. Our condolences go out to Steve. Once again Thanks to Ken Elliott for sending a wreath in care of the 2/9 Network.

I would like to at this time thank Jim Chase, Sam Conner, Jim Joyce, Mary Staresinich in memory of her husband Joe "Starch", Charles Conley, Ted Licitra, SgtMaj Lester Wadleigh, John & Wanda Carson, Kenton Dean, Tom Reasch, Herbert Thrasher, Tom Callum, General Dennis Murphy, George Bebbington, Chadwick Floyd, Patrick McKenna, Jr., Captain William Whorton, Lee Cobb, Gierard Fitzpatrick, Glenn Elvey, Tim Forbes, Major General Jack Davis, Richard Biskup. Jim Langford, Colonel Bill Cryan and Barbara, Colonel W. J. Wood, Charles Cooper, Douglas Youens, Thomas Darcy, Major J.T. Guggino, Joe Henebury, Ralph Martinez, Paul Morin, Colonel James Davis, Leonard Bruguier, Gunny Ed Harker and Colonel Jim Davis for their help in supporting the Network this year. I couldn't do this without your help and I might be late getting out the Thank You notes and sometimes I might forget. Right now I am in the working hard and heavy getting the plants in the field on the farm and have been really busy. I know that I forgot to get out a couple of Thank Yous but please don't feel slighted. Everyone's support is greatly appreciated.

I'm begging this time!

I know that I bug you all with every letter but believe me every contribution helps. This isn't a business and there is no membership fee or dues. When you were assigned to 2/9 you became a charter member. I also realize that a bunch of you had put 2/9 and The Corps behind you and then "Bam" you were blindsided by a letter from something called the 2/9 Network and I have caused you to relive things that you might have forgotten. To those I have caused pain I apologize. To those I have brought some semblance of joy, well what can I say. But I can't afford do this alone and now I could really use the help.

I have enough monies for this mail out but will not be able to get out the final reminder out in August without your help. So if you don't hear from me in August this is the reason. To reserve the banquet room at the restaurant I had to put down $1000.ºº So if you can spare a dollar or two or whatever please do so. I need your help more than ever!

I just want to say that I hope to see a great group once again in November. Each year I expect the reunion to be smaller. Each year it grows. Last year 165 at the banquet plus 21 that we couldn't fit in. So again, there are 65 rooms blocked this year. After those rooms are taken the regular hotel rate kicks in. So if you're planning on coming don't wait until the last moment to make your reservation. And please send in your banquet order early.

So once again
Semper Fi and See You at the Iwo Jima...
