Battalion Runner Gabe
Coronado P.O. Box 611535, Pt. Huron MI 48060 LISTEN UP! Some of you grunts contacted me after the last Runner because your name was not listed on the roster update. The update contains the names and contact information for only men who have joined or had changes in information since the last full roster was published in June 2006. The new guys since the last Runner are listed at the end of this one. 2007 REUNION The 2/9 Network Reunion is scheduled for November 9th - 12th in Washington, D.C. We have reserved a block of rooms at the Virginian Suites Hotel in Arlington. You can make a reservation by calling 1-800-275-2866. You may want to reserve early as last year we had such a great turn out that we ran out of rooms. If you change your mind, you can cancel with no penalty as late as 2 days before your reservation date. We have reserved additional space for the Marine Corps Birthday Party this year so it will be much less crowded. An information sheet on the Reunion is included with this newsletter. NOTES FROM THE MAILBOX Jim Kesel (HQHS 2/9, 65-67) writes,” I was a radio operator for the 1st Reaction Platoon and also worked for Regt Liaison to ARVN units. I was attached to various units within the 9th Regt during many different operations from July of 65 until January of 67. I spent time with Hotel, H&S and Golf companies on 4 different occasions. We are a U.S. Marine family going back to WW1 with two of my cousins serving with the 9th Marines including Howard Heimke who was with Hotel Co. We have family that has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.” THIS IS WHAT THE NETWORK IS ALL ABOUT! Rod McGuire (H&S 2/9, 77) writes, “I just watched a PBS special about the Marine Corps and as always I am as proud now as I have ever been about having been a Marine. I am very glad to hear that 2/9 is standing up in 2007. I would be very interested to know when and where 2/9 will be deployed and any info regarding sending care packages to anonymous 2/9 recipients.” 2ND BATTALION 9TH MARINES RISE AGAIN There has been quite a bit of interest and information coming in about the reactivation of the 2/9. I recently received an email from Major Mark Slusher who is the XO of Anti-Terrorism Bn, 2nd Marine Division which will form the nucleus for the reactivated 2/9. He informs us that they are currently in the process of transitioning to 2/9, with the formal deactivation/activation ceremony scheduled to take place on 13 July at Camp Lejeune. He says he will continue to provide us information as they get closer to the big day. We are already getting some new members from this reactivation. NOTES FROM NEW MEMBERS Steven Aikens comments, “In the reactivation of July 16, 2007 I will be in 1st Plt Echo Co. I will carry the torch on and never forget my brothers that paid the price of freedom.” Ben Schuster (F 2/9 88-92) comments, “Looking for some old friends…Daniel Ray Kuelker…you out there?" Robert Bagley comments, “I was a member of STA Platoon…served with very admirable Marines…looking to catch back up with as many as possible! Semper Fidelis.” Russ “Doc” Jacobson (E 2/9 66-67) remembers “Hill 861, March 16 1967.”
Col. William D. Kent made a donation to the 2/9 Network in memory and honor of 1st Sgt. Arboneaux who was listed under “Last Patrol” in the past newsletter. He writes, “Arboneaux was the Battalion Ops chief during the time I had 2/9 during ‘67 and he was a fine fellow. He will be missed.” DONATIONS A big OOH-RAH goes out to the latest donors helping to keep the network running: Curt Leslie, Scott Whelan, Pete Padilla, Michael Nichols, Bob Driver, Tim Forbes, Stephen Gehring, Ray Sullivan, Kenton Dean, Pete Gonzales, Tom Callum, Thomas McCarthy, David Lawton (in memory of Doc Black), Paul Mountain, Rod McGuire, Charles Cooper, Glenn Siegler, Tom Reasch, Mike Haburt, Andrew Puttagio, Ralph Martinez, James McMillan, Michael Kowalewski, Henebury, John Gangwer, Joe Manino, Maj.
