NOVEMBER REUNION

We‘re gearing up for the annual reunion which is scheduled for November 9th – 12th and will be held in Washington, DC. Every year there are new men coming for the first time and finding old buddies they haven’t seen or heard from since Nam. It is a great time for reconnecting, sharing memories and having fun. You don’t have to register and drinks & snacks are provided at no charge. A can for donations will be set out in the conference room for those who wish to contribute. There is no registration deadline, but to get the group rate at the hotel you need to book your room by October 8th. Please feel free to bring a friend or family.

A flyer with all the details went out in the last newsletter. If you did not receive it, the information is available on the website, or you can call me at 810-987-4038 and I will gladly put one in the mail. For room reservations call Virginian Suites toll free at 800-275-2866 or check them out on line at www.virginiansuites.com .

Special thanks to those members who have already sent donations to help with the reunion costs.

REMINDER: THE LAST DAY TO MAKE RESERVATIONS AT THE GROUP RATE IS OCTOBER 8TH.

NOTES FROM THE MAILBOX

GySgt Nick Fox (G/29, 2008-present) writes, “I am the platoon commander for 3rd plt G Co. We are deploying as a battalion for the first time next month. Semper Fi brothers, I know you will be walking point with us.” Contact GySgt Fox at: nfox1@ec.rr.com

Jim “Doc” Fultz (H2/9, 66-67) writes, “I’m sending you a photo of Bob Syler (1/9, 66-67) and me outside the 2/9 BAS in Phu Bai…I’m the one on the left in the ‘jungle Utes’. I tell young people now days that we were wearing cargo pants long before they became a fashion statement. As I look at the photo again, Bob & I were so skinny we could tread water in a garden hose. We were lean. You can’t get pork, chicken, or beef that lean…then or now.”

Scott Dorsey (HQHS, 74-75) writes, “Does anyone know the whereabouts of Capt. Sean Leach, CO of Fox Co 2/9 in 1974/75? He was CO until just prior to the Mayaquesz fiasco. He rotated before I did and I would like to get in contact with him. His XO was 1st Lt. Gunter and the company Gunny was GySgt Davis. Also, I’m looking for Cpl Wolford who was in the company CP.” Contact Dorsey at ftdodgecavnut@hotmail.com.

Joe Mondragon (HQHS, 61-62) writes, “Looking for information on operation in Thailand, was 2/9 back up force for 3/9 on May 19, 1962.” Contact Joe at: mondragonjoe@hotmail.com.

Col. John Peeler (Battalion, 66-67) writes, “I won’t be able to make it to the reunion this year, but please pass my best regards to the wonderful troops I commanded from Nov. 66 to Nov. 67…they were the best, both officers and enlisted.”

Ralph Martinez (G2/9, 66-67) writes, “On or about April 16th 1966 while on patrol acting as a blocking force, I was wounded along with several other Marines from my unit by friendly artillery fire south of DaNang. While I was in the hospital for 45 days, 1st plt took a lot of casualties. Can anyone tell me what happened during that time? Also, does anyone remember Steve Melgarejo (Mel) or Sgt Smith from Hanover PA, or Martin from San Francisco?” If you have information on any of this, contact Ralph at: 530-272-8202 or paparufus13@netzero.net.”

Robert Breitweiser writes, “My uncle, Bill Breitweiser was a Lt. in Fox Co, 67-69. I would like to hear from anyone who knew him.” Contact Robert at: 828-274-8407 or rab3nc@lycos.com.

Wendell Hoffman writes, “I am looking for information on my uncle, Shuler Hoffman (E2/9, 67-68). I have done a lot of research and can’t seem to find much about his unit or his friends.” Contact Wendell at: 803-955-9247 or bethorwendell@bellsouth.net.

Tirso Gomez writes, “My cousin, Jose Maria Flores (F2/9) was KIA April 11, 1967. I would like to know the circumstances of his death, or if anyone knew him in Nam.” Contact Gomez at: 817-975-0724 or titoboy1@sbcglobal.net.

Ralph Martinez (G2/9, 66-67), writes,” I am looking for Steve Melgarejo, we were both in 1st plt.” Contact Ralph at: paparufus13@suddenlink.net

Lenny Miller Jr. (H&S 70-71) writes, “The majority of us are still ‘marking time’. If my poem meets your approval I would be happy if we could share it with our fellow Marines.”

MARKING TIME

Spit and get
Sharp as an edge
Shine like a new mercury dime
Thought he was marchin’
Until I looked again
Man, was he smooth
He was only markin’ time

Closely shaven
Hair cut neat
Chest out
Shoulders wide and back
Shoes shinin’like onyx
Blacker than black

Thumbs on the seam
Fingers at a curl
Eyes straight ahead
The stripe on his trousers
Chapultepec – red

He didn’t lock either knee
Toes pointed at a forty-five degree
This man’s rough, tough, polished
and
Comes with a guarantee
He belongs to you
The united states of America
U.S.M.C.

Spit and get
Sharp as an edge
Shine like a new mercury dine
Thought he was marchin’until I
looked again
Man, was he smooth

He was only markin’ time
